Your Best Place to Start the Home Buying Process

Specifically tailored to the needs of Maine homeowners, hoMEworks has been helping first-time and other home buyers like you since 1998. The guiding philosophy of hoMEworks is “The best place to start the home buying process is in the classroom.” Toward that goal, hoMEworks offers a comprehensive homeownership education program delivered by a network of Maine industry professionals in convenient locations throughout the state or as an online class.

Key Benefits of the hoMEworks Program

hoMEworks was meticulously designed to offer you clear, “soup to nuts” information and guidance about every facet of the Maine home buying process—including how to choose the most beneficial mortgage option. You'll also learn about credit and debt management, budgeting, and much more.

Even if you feel your perfect home-buying time is a year or more down the road, we highly recommend you attend a local hoMEworks class in person or online. (In our experience, in-person participation is the most beneficial option, as it facilitates an optimum interactive experience AND empowers you to develop relationships with helpful industry professionals and others in your community.)

About hoMEworks

hoMEworks began in 1998 when a broad-based group of homeownership professionals from private, nonprofit, and government organizations joined in support of consumer education for homebuyers. Working cooperatively, the initial hoMEworks directors built consensus on the best type of program to serve both public and private sector interests while educating potential homeowners. Today, the hoMEworks Board of Directors represents a “Who’s Who” of Maine’s top housing professionals, including leaders from the Maine Association of Mortgage Professionals, Maine Association of REALTORS®, Maine Bankers Association, Maine Community Action Association, Maine Credit Union League, and MaineHousing.

Class Fees and Details

The cost of in person hoMEworks classes is just $30 per person or $50 for two. The online version is $99.00. Also—and very importantly—completing a hoMEworks-approved homebuyer education class is required to be eligible for MaineHousing’s $5,000 Advantage towards down payment and closing costs.

In person classes, which require advance registration, are offered statewide in the evenings and on weekends. Your Certificate of Completion (required for down payment assistance programs) will be valid for two years.
